ContextLens Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 10, 2026
ContextLens is a Chrome extension that lets you select text on a web page and ask an AI model to explain, summarize or rewrite it. This policy explains what data the extension handles. In short: the developer does not collect, store or receive any of your data. ContextLens has no servers, analytics or tracking.
Data sent to the AI provider you choose
Only when you click Explain, Summarize or Rewrite (or press the keyboard shortcut), ContextLens sends the following directly from your browser to the AI provider you configured (OpenAI or Anthropic):
- The text you selected, limited to 6,000 characters
- The title of the current web page, to give the model context
- The instruction for the action you chose
- Your API key, which the provider requires to authenticate the request
Nothing is sent while you browse or select text without clicking an action. The extension can only make network
requests to api.openai.com and api.anthropic.com. How those providers handle the data is
governed by their own terms and privacy policies:
OpenAI and
Anthropic.
Data stored on your device
Your settings (provider, model name and API key) are saved in Chrome's local extension storage
(chrome.storage.local) on your device. They are not synced to your Google account and are never sent
to the developer. Selected text and AI responses are not saved; they are discarded when you close the panel.
You can delete everything by removing the extension.
What ContextLens does not do
- It does not collect personal information, browsing history or analytics.
- It does not sell or share data with anyone other than the AI provider you select.
- It does not use data for advertising, credit decisions or any purpose other than answering your request.
- It does not load or run remote code.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
